Case Study: Transforming Winstanley College’s Dining Hall

Transforming Winstanley College’s Dining Hall

Wigan

The Challenge

Winstanley College wanted to create a welcoming dining space where staff and students could relax and enjoy their meals. However, the dining hall’s conservatory-style roof made the environment uncomfortable all year round—too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter. Over time, this made the space almost unusable, leaving the college in urgent need of a practical and long-lasting solution.

The Vision

When long-term partner Flat Roofing Systems, Wigan approached us with this project, Managing Director Steve immediately saw the potential to turn the problem into an opportunity. His vision was to retain and reinforce the existing structure while modernising the roof to deliver both comfort and style. After detailed discussions and careful structural assessments, we were confident in Steve’s proposal and excited to bring it to life.

The Solution

To ensure strength and stability, our TH85 lightweight steel members were carefully installed in strategic positions across the framework. These provided the durability needed without adding unnecessary weight. With the groundwork in place, the skilled Flat Roofing Systems installation team worked swiftly and precisely to fit a new strip tile covering, giving the roof a contemporary, refreshed look.

The Outcome

The transformation has been remarkable. The dining hall now:

  • Maintains a comfortable, consistent temperature year-round.
  • Boasts a modern, revitalised appearance that enhances the college environment.
  • Has been brought back to life as a central hub for students and staff.

Today, the dining hall is once again a space where the college community can gather, relax, and enjoy meals in comfort. What was once an underused area is now a shining example of how thoughtful design, expert craftsmanship, and trusted partnerships can transform a building for the better.
